The South Shore Story
01:10:00 Runtime
The Chicago, South Shore and South Bend Railroad has a century-long story, the highlights of which are depicted in this hour-long documentary. Veteran video producer Bill Warrick has brought together historic films which run from the 1920's to the present, as well as interviews and narration from many of the men who made the line go. All three classes of cars are shown running between South Bend and Chicago just south of Lake Michigan. That includes runbys by the early alternating current interurban cars, the famous orange direct current cars and the current, state of the art silver sided cars. Some of the trials and tribulations, including accidents, are covered as well as the valiant efforts to keep the only rail commuter service in Northern Indiana operating. Although it has been said that the South Shore Line spent its first 70 years trying to go out of business, it is now operated by a government agency, the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District and plans are afoot for an even greater expansion. As historic rail programs go, this is a new classic.
